Artist Statement

Once when I was seven years old, my family and I sat down together to watch Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. I was not and still not a fan of scary, gruesome, horror flicks so I covered my eyes every time I heard creepy music. Then it came to the part where the headless horsemen was galloping through the town and slaying anyone who stood in his way. I ducked under the covers concealing my eyes and screaming because I thought that the horsemen would come after me too. Meanwhile, my little sister, about five years old, was cheering the horsemen on and saying, "Cut off their heads!" I couldn't believe that someone could watch the same film as me and feel a totally different emotion than I felt, especially at such a young age. However, it wasn't until I grew up and watched more movies and experienced new things, that I understood how movies draw on the audiences emotions and how important that is in the film's success.
When I first got behind the wheel of a car I was scared, excited, exhilarated, and nervous. But most of all I felt like anything was possible; that I could do anything. Of course that wasn't and isn't true, but I still feel that way every time I get in the car to drive. For me film is the same way; it can make you feel so many different emotions all at once or spread out throughout the film. When I watch a film a whole different world takes me in and I become part of the movie; not just a spectator. I connect with the characters and I follow them through their journey. I hope that one day I will be able to recreate what movies do for me for everyone else through film editing. I want to use film editing to take a shot and put it in a particular way that it will make you experience an that maybe you haven't felt in a while. Everyone is different and we all feel things differently and I want the chance to show that through my work, whether it be through editing or directing (Either would suffice).
Currently I stick to watching comedies, romance, and the occasional science fiction or action movie. Personally, I really love the movies by Peter Jackson. One of my favorites by him would be District 9. The story being told though its documentary style camera operation made me feel for the every character in the film. I am also a sucker for the heartbreaking ending.

  1. - Similarities you find in each other's statements
I like that you chose to have a picture of yourself, and a personal story from your childhood incorporated into your Blog. Both give a personal touch to your site, and make it easier for the viewer to catch a glimpse of the "true you". This is in part why I choice to use a picture of myself in my site, along with a personal story from an earlier part of my life; some 35 years ago.
    - Differences you find in each other's statements
I like that you included an in depth analysis of what film means to you personally, and how one can use it to make people feel/think a certain way. Although I would have liked to have included something like this in my Blog, because of spatial constraints (i.e. word limitations) I found it necessary to sacrifice the presence of such language.
I also like that you mention not only one of your favorite filmmakers, but also why you like his particular technique, i.e. shooting a movie in a documentary style that leads you to feel for every character. Similarly, I like Cesar Charlone and his work in City of God, but once again had to sacrifice any mention of this, as well as comments on having worked with him this past October, due to spatial constraints. The inclusion of such things serves to give the reader a sense of you personal approach to filmmaking.
    - Questions: What other details would you like to know about the other person?
    I can't think of anything.

  2. Hello Mia,

I really like the way you wrote your statement! You picked one personal experience and described it in colorful language to make your point clear. I agree very much that the creation of media-making, and art in general allows us to experience a new quality of freedom. I also think that you raise very relevant observations in your comment, especially when stating that:

“However, it wasn't until I grew up and watched more movies and experienced new things, that I understood how movies draw on the audiences emotions and how important that is in the film's success.”

Movies have an enormous potential to impact the emotion of its audience. It was not long ago that only very few people had access to filmmaking, means only a small elite had the power to influence the emotions and opinions of an mass audience. But now a certain democratization of media-making is taking place – more and more people have the possibility to make videos and distribute them online. These changes bear great potential of emancipation and also a lot of responsibility.

I am curious how you will explore these powerful devices in your media project.

  3. - Similarities you find in each other's statements
I can definitely relate to the way you enjoy movies. I like movies that make me feel for the characters, and that make me feel a different array of emotions. I also like feeling that the characters are almost real - many times I become attached to the people in movies. I've always sort of dreamed about creating movies, occasionally mapping out rough ideas of story-lines I'd like to make, or envisioning particular scenes in my head with a certain setting and backdrop, but I've never had the means of actually filming or creating anything because I wouldn't really know how to go about setting everything up. This is why I can relate to you wanting to learn how to edit and direct because I want to learn the same thing. I hope one day to be able to create something, even something short, like a two minute scene, that really conveys an emotion or something powerful to the audience.

    - Differences you find in each other's statements
Honestly I see more similarities than differences in our statements, except for maybe the fact that I enjoy horror movies. I'm not a huge fan of them, and I don't get easily scared by them either, but I do enjoy occasionally watching one every now and then, if only to laugh at them (usually with my friends) or make fun of how bad they are. I feel like there are very few good horror movies, at least recently, and a lot of bad ones, so I think its interesting that people could feel humor when it comes to horror movies, but also, like you said, different emotions as well, such as scared or suspenseful.

- Questions: What other details would you like to know about the other person?
I'm not exactly a fan of romance movies, but which ones in particular are you a fan of? Also, you said you were a fan of ''District 9'' and a movie I saw recently that sort of reminds me of this one is ''Super 8'' - if you haven't seen it you should definitely check it out.
